Special thanks to Matej Meštrović for donating the song “Awakening” from the album “Sounds of Velebit” for the exhibition.
“This exhibition is based on the paradigm that we all, at least to some extent, experience synesthesia and that it is more pronounced in creative people. The exhibition includes the instrumental musical theme “Awakening” by the famous Croatian pianist and composer Matej Meštrović from his album “Sounds of Velebit”. Authors are invited to visualize what they hear, ie to interpret the shape and color of music, what emotions, memories or states of mind are initiated by a given musical theme, and how to materialize sound and its reflections in us. Out of a total of 35 registered artists, 27 authors were selected who, while listening to an instrumental musical theme, offered their own interpretations of what was experienced. The diversity and individuality of perception and artistic interpretation of a given musical theme further confirmed that the experience and view of the world are not universal in all people, so the experience of synesthesia differs from person to person. In the medium of art jewelry, objects, sculptures, dolls, textiles, paintings, illustrations, drawings and video works, artists have transcended literal interpretation, delved deeper into their interior and offered extremely diverse and original interpretations. ”Sonja Švec Španjol, from the foreword
